About Rutland
Rutland became an incorporated village in 1886,
then a city (third in the state, after Vergennes and Burlington)
in 1892. Today, it is the second largest city in the state after
Burlington. Centrally located in the heart of the Green Mountains,
Rutland is well-known for its pristine beauty and its outdoor
recreational opportunities. The region is a four-seasons paradise,
offering limitless opportunities to enjoy skiing, hiking, golfing,
fishing and water sports as well as many other recreational
pursuits.
Downtown
Rutland is the heart of the city. Combining a traditional New
England downtown atmosphere filled with independently-owned
small shops, boutiques, and eateries with regional and national
retailers, downtown Rutland is known for its eclectic mix of
the old and new.
